Minister of Community Services Ida Chong, centre, along with Mayor Janet Evans, right and Coun. Rick Armour officially cut the ribbon at the groundbreaking ceremony for the marine boardwalk last Tuesday. The 2010 Olympic/Paralympic Live Sites Program contributed $330,000 to the project which is expected to cost over $1million for the 1,100 foot boardwalk.

The marine boardwalk which will skirt the harbour front from the Rotary Pier to the bottom of Ed Macgregor Park will come in at an estimated price tag of $1.008-million.

At council on October 9, council authorized staff to proceed with a fundraising campaign for the boardwalk.

The overall cost of the boardwalk project contract is $908,000 which includes construction of the boardwalk and a wheelchair accessible path from the shoreline through Ed Macgregor Park to Sooke Road.

Other enhancements to the project include solar lighting, benches, fire protection/security system, educational/interpretive signs and a handicap accessible washroom, these come with a $100,000 price tag.

As well financial assistance will be required for maintenance and expansion.

The residents and businesses in Sooke will be asked to chip in $300,000 for the project to help reduce the cost for the district from $578,000 to $278,000. The $578,000 was to come from the Casino Revenue funds.

The District of Sooke has applied for community grants for accessibility and is looking for corporate support through cash or in-kind donations as well as public donations in the form of sponsorship of a section of the boardwalk.

Corporate Services Manager/Deputy Clerk Bonnie Sprinkling is the staff person who will be handling the fundraising campaign.

Coun. Brenda Parkinson said she did not think it was in the staff job description to fundraise. She thought it might have been a better idea to hire a professional fundraiser.

“I think it is a conflict of interest,” said Parkinson.

The District of Sooke received $330,000 from the 2010 Olympic/Paralympic Live Sites Program,$300,000 from the Casino Revenue Funds, and the remaining $300,000 is expected to come from contribution from within the community.
